A garage door is the heaviest moving object in most houses and the only one nobody ever services. A service is an hour's work that finds the failures before they strand you.
What's included
- Full inspection of springs, cables, drums, rollers, hinges and tracks.
- Lubrication of all moving parts with the right grade, not WD-40, which strips lubricant rather than adding it.
- Rebalance of the door, so the springs are doing the work instead of the motor.
- Tightening of the fixings, which vibrate loose over years.
- Testing and adjustment of the opener force settings and safety reverse.
- Alignment and clean of the safety beams.
- A written note of anything that's wearing, and roughly how long it has left.
How often
Annually for a standard household. Every six months if the garage is your main entrance and the door cycles six or more times a day, or if you're near the coast. Salt air is hard on cables and hardware, and much of our service area is close enough to the water for it to matter.
Signs you're overdue
- Grinding, squealing or banging.
- The door shuddering or jerking on the way up.
- It's noticeably slower than it used to be.
- It won't stay put halfway when you lift it by hand with the opener disconnected.
That last one is the important test. A door that drops or flies up is unbalanced, and it means the opener is carrying weight it was never designed to carry.
The honest case for a service. It costs a fraction of a spring replacement, and the balance check is the single thing that most extends the life of both the springs and the motor. It won't stop a spring from eventually failing, since springs are consumable, but it will stop the motor burning out early, and it will usually give you warning before the spring goes.
